More Funnel Vision, Dating and Your Job Search
By Kevin Donlin | January 22nd, 2008
I wrote yesterday how Funnel Vision can solve your job-search problems faster by letting you see the world differently.
To recap, Funnel Vision is defined as follows: looking far and wide for successful ideas that are beyond your current endeavor, then borrowing and adapting them to create breakthroughs.
Think velcro (adapted from cockleburr seeds) and drive-thru windows at restaurants (adapted from banks), for example.
In your job search, think putting a P.S. in your cover letters (adapted from junk mail) or putting quotes in your resume (adapted from the testimonials in TV infomercials).
This whole idea of seeing and thinking differently is a tough concept for some folks to get their heads around, so I want to give you still another example today of how Funnel Vision can supercharge your job search.
Let’s talk about dating and your job search …
Specifically, let’s talk about how you can land a new job faster by using Funnel Vision to adapt success secrets from dating. Because dating is very much like job hunting: It all comes down to meeting the right person and making him or her like you.
Where can you find successful dating tips to adapt using Funnel Vision? Don’t ask me. I was a social buffoon all through high school and college, with most of my girlfriends appearing out of dumb luck. No, to find dating best practices, we had better start by reading a few books written by experts.
Let’s visit Amazon.com and type in “how to meet women” or “how to meet men.” This produces loads of ideas to translate to your job search.
Here’s a shortlist of dating tips I compiled in 3 minutes of reading blurbs and book covers at Amazon — how can you adapt them to your job search?
-
Ideal mates can be found anywhere (just like employers). Expand your options by being mentally ready at all times to meet that someone special.
-
Always try to understand the other person’s point of view (in this case, the employer). What do they really want? What are they afraid of? What turns them on and off?
-
No action = no results. Never wait by the phone. Get out and meet people to find the right person (or boss).
-
Never underestimate the value of a smile. (I think this is also principle #3 from Dale Carnegie’s book, How to Make Friends and Influence People. See? Now we’ve made a three-way connection: dating = human relations = job hunting.)
-
When someone doesn’t want you (man, woman or employer), that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. Move on to the next one — it’s just a numbers game.
To sum up, the ideas you need to transform your job search are out there. You might find them in nature (like cockleburr seeds), in a book on dating, or someplace else. But you’ll never know until you open your eyes and start seeing the world through Funnel Vision.
