Meet Up?

By Kevin Donlin | April 11th, 2008

Just got back today from a conference in Los Angeles.

Landed at 1:00 this morning after 30 minutes of turbulence all the way down on final approach, in the middle of a sleet storm, with gusty winds and low visibility. But the pilot put us down so softly, you would have thought it was blue sky in July, not the dead of night in a near blizzard. I shook his hand on the way out. (Now THERE’S a job that merits a tip jar, in the form of a 40-gallon drum.)

Anyway …

I managed to learn a few things while sitting in the LA Convention Center for 3 days getting re-schooled on marketing by Jay Abraham, Seth Godin, Dr. Steven R. Covey, et al.

Seth Godin, author of many best-selling marketing books and one of the world’s most-read bloggers, shared some intriguing insights.

In a nutshell:

  • Curiosity is an essential part of success. A fundamentalist looks at the world to see how it fits what they believe. A curious person looks and changes their beliefs, as needed. (How often do you catch yourself being a fundamentalist? For me, a little too often!)

  • Godin answers 200+ emails a day to stay curious by staying connected with his readers. He has no staff or assistants to help with this. Not one. (How often do you try to keep the world at arm’s length? This can be me in spades.)

  • Our habits keep us from becoming curious. To make curiosity a new habit, we should go to a new restaurant, read a new blog — even try a new toothpaste. (I have nothing to say about toothpaste.)

I decided to feed my curiosity by doing one notably new thing today. So I joined Meetup.com, where you can connect with people in cities all over America. It’s free to join. They have groups that meet on every topic you can think of, from Air Hockey to Work-at-Home Moms.

FYI, my group is the Twin Cities Professional Networking Event and it next meets on Tuesday night, April 22. (You get the full details after you join.) If you do join, I hope to meet up with you there!

Why not get out from behind your computer, go somewhere you’ve never been, meet just one new person and make a human connection? It could lead to a new job. Or a friendship. Even a romance. Who knows? But it all starts when you get curious.
