Think You’ve Got Competition for Jobs? Try Getting Hired on SNL …
By Kevin Donlin | September 29th, 2008
What can SNL comedian Kevin Nealon teach you about finding a job in today’s tough job market?
In this case, two very valuable lessons.
Watch the first 2:05 of the video above, which are the most relevant to your job search.
Then read the two lessons below …
1) Networking– Kevin knew Dana Carvey, who had just been hired SNL.
Questions: Who do you know who just got a job?
How could you tell them to put in a good word for you? (Not could you, but HOW could you?) Even if your friend’s employer ”isn’t hiring” or has a “hiring freeze” how could you convince hiring authorities that you’d be just as valuable a new employee as your friend?
2) The audition tape. Kevin’s was obviously good.
Questions: How’s your audition tape?
Your resume is the bare-bones minimum here. And it had better be OUTSTANDING in today’s job market. (If it’s not, you can get it fixed here.)
Beyond your resume, your “audition tape” can and should include your profile on LinkedIn.com, your blog, and a “career profile” — a 3-ring binder with copies of your awards, projects, letters of recommendation and anything else that can sell you to employers.
Does your “audition tape” portray you in the BEST possible light, with specific results that make you look like a star? If not, how can you improve your materials, starting today?
