Big Employment Opportunities at Small Businesses

By Kevin Donlin | October 2nd, 2008

Here’s another reason why small is the new big in your job search.

A new ADP Employment Report indicates that the U.S. lost 8,000 private sector jobs from August to September 2008.

Most of the job losses were in large and medium sized businesses, which cut about 36,000 workers in September. But, that number was offset by gains in small businesses, which created 28,000 new jobs.

Got that?

Small businesses, which are the engine of our economy — and a great place for you to look in your search for work — added 28,000 new jobs in August.

For the first eight months of 2008, Bloomberg.com reports that the October 1 ADP data showed a decrease of 72,000 workers in goods-producing industries including manufacturers and construction companies.

Translation: goods-producing jobs offer slim pickin’s.

Service providers, on the other hand, added 64,000 workers in the first 8 months of 2008.

Translation: service jobs are worth a look.

And, here’s the kicker: Companies employing more than 499 workers shrank their workforces by 6,000 jobs. Medium-sized businesses, with 50 to 499 employees, cut 30,000 jobs.

But … small companies increased payrolls by 28,000 from January 1 to August 31 this year.

Is small the new big? It certainly appears to be the strongest part of our economy right now.

Best part: Small businesses are all around you. And they all have problems to solve or opportunities to seize, in any city, in any economy. YOU can help — and YOU can get hired — if you:

1) research their problems and opportunities;

2) find a decision maker who can hire you;

3) make contact with that person;

4) start a conversation;

5) demonstrate your knowledge, and

6) offer proof that you can help.

    I work for a small company that has been in business 13 years. The last two years we have added 2 full time and 2 part time positions to our staff…now we have a whopping 21 people in our office. We have addeded these positions because of our increase in independent sales people that have also joined our company. We are actually looking to hire 1 more full time person. Many friends that work at larger companies have been feeling the pain of corporate layoffs and hiring freezes, and I work at a company that is the exact opposite. I’ve been here 4 years now and I wouldn’t go back to Big Corporate again.
