Blog and Twitter Job Search Tip
By Kevin Donlin | October 10th, 2008
If I had to hire an employee, I’d hire Jason Alba from JibberJobber.com.
But I can’t afford him and he’s probably un-employable, like me.
So I do the next best thing: I send readers to his blog all the time!
Today is one of those times.
He’s just managed to get a blog posting on the desk of the CEO at Southwest Airlines (about the only well-run airline in the US of A) through a clever combination of blogging and Tweeting.
Read Jason’s blog post here, then come back and get my tips on how to adapt it to your job search.
I’ll wait …
Back? Good. Here’s how to take Jason’s excellent idea and run with it all the way to your next job:
1) Find a decision maker at a firm you want to work for; this is easier with smaller companies, obviously. Begin at Linkedin, since almost everybody is there.
2)“Start work before you’re hired” by doing something that showcases ths skills/expertise you’d get paid to use if you were an employee.
In Jason’s case, he displayed his expert knowledge of Linkedin by actually doing a “makeover” of the Southwest CEO’s profile. All you have to do is read the thing and you immediately think, “Wow. Jason knows his stuff. I need to follow this advice.”
What could you upload to your blog (you do have a blog, right?) that wows readers, like Jason’s makeover? It should be so good, the reaction from any employer is, “Wow. This guy/girl knows their stuff. I need to talk to them.”
Here are some ideas:
-
write a white paper or competitive analysis;
-
do a PowerPoint presentation detailing a case study from your last job;
-
interview an employer’s customers and/or competitors on video.
3) Blog about what you do. (Don’t have a blog? Don’t let that stop you now, but get one soon.)
4) Give away the information to the target employer. Start by Tweeting to someone at the firm like Jason did; email them a few hours later. Call if you’re gutsy. Snail mail without fail, just to be sure they get it.
5)If you can’t have a conversation that leads to an interview after 3 tries, email me, because I’d love to help with what you’re doing — kevin at thesimplejobsearch.com

Kevin, this is a TERRIFIC post… I kind of wrote the original post with a purpose, but didn’t think I’d get a turnaround that quickly. Your lesson here is spot-on, and I’ll be sure to do it again!
