How to Get a Job Created for You at a Small Business

By Kevin Donlin | June 15th, 2009

Here’s a 7-minute podcast I did with Jennifer Perkins, who was hired for a job that was created just for her.

She found a job posted by a small business on Craigslist and, even though she was overqualified, applied anyway, because the employer looked interesting.

You can learn two important things from her job-hunting success story:

1) You should focus most of your job-search efforts on small businesses, because they create up to 80% of new jobs in the U.S. economy. And they almost always make hiring decisions faster than Fortune 500 companies.

2) When you interview at a small business, you’re probably talking to the owner. So be ready to get hired on the spot for an existing job or, as in Jennifer’s case, discuss creating a new job just for you.

What’s more impressive is that Jennifer got hired for her job in February 2009, during the current recession (the worst job market in 20+ years), in Michigan (the worst job market in America).
