Guerrilla Job Search Informational Call

By Kevin Donlin | September 29th, 2009

Thanks to the 300+ people who joined us for a Guerrilla Job Search informational call today, called:

The 5 Secrets For Job Search Success:
Do You Have What It Takes?

We’re not sure how, but we managed to exceed capacity for our telephone conference line … and some folks got shut out of the call.

Not to worry — we recorded it and you can listen below!

Here’s a quick recap of what David Perry, recruiter Mark Haluska, and I discussed for about 40 minutes:

  • The latest success stories involving our patent-pending ”Coffee Cup Caper,” that produces job interviews in up to 66% of cases. It’s getting people interviews in Chicago, L.A., St. Paul, Ottawa — is your city next?

  • How to create a “feeding frenzy” among employers who want to hire you (it worked in a city with 65% unemployment – 65%! — and it can work for you, no matter WHERE you live.)

  • Extreme Networking Secrets you can use to “recruit yourself” into your next job (revealed by a recruiter!)

  • The 5 Secrets For Job Search Success

  • How to improve any cover letter in less than 2 minutes

As I said, if you missed the call, you can listen right now.

Be sure to take take notes, because we gave you several phone scripts you can use word-for-word to set up meetings with people who can hire you … even at companies that aren’t hiring! (Like GM, for example — listen to find out.)

After you listen, we invite you to learn more about our Guerrilla Job Search Bootcamp, which produces success stories on a regular basis. Hurry — registration closes on Friday, October 2, 2009.

The call is broken into two parts, so more people can listen online at once:

Michigan Man Lands 6-Figure Job in 8 Days with Guerrilla Job Search Tactics

By Kevin Donlin | September 29th, 2009

If you’re looking for the toughest place in America to find a job, try Michigan.

The state, hammered by the collapsing auto industry, has suffered the highest unemployment rate in the U.S. for 14 straight months.

Yet, one Michigan man was recently hired for a 6-figure position — in only 8 days.

Bill McCausland, from suburban Detroit, beat all odds by landing a job that was not advertised and paid a higher salary than his previous position.

“Since being laid off at the end of June 2009, I had been aggressively looking for a professional opportunity. But all of the tactics that I used before, with a lot of success, weren’t working for me,” says McCausland.

But something changed.

McCausland was hired for a management position that was created for him, a success he credits to “Guerrilla” job search methods, including this one: He started working before he was hired.

Pay attention. Because if this can work in Michigan — in 8 days — it can work anywhere.

It has three parts …

1) Research the employer.

Learn all you can about the needs, problems, and opportunities of companies you want to work for. This will help you create a compelling message that appeals to an employer’s self-interest … while ordinary job seekers are simply asking for a job.

McCausland reached out for this information to customers and competitors of his target employer. “I spoke with a competitor and asked them, ‘What is it about Company ABC that keeps you awake at night?’ That competitor told me a ton.”

2) Research the job.

Learn all you can about the work you would do if hired.

Here are four ways to do it:

  • Ask people in your network of contacts on Linkedin and Facebook for information. Human intelligence is best.
  • Search online for resumes and profiles of people who work at your target employer.
  • If the job is advertised, analyze the required skills to cull out what you’ll be doing if hired.
  • Search Google and the employer’s web site for press releases announcing new employees. You’ll often find reasons why those people were hired — precious information.

3) Prove you can do the job, in the interview.

The most effective way is to audition and perform the required skills.

Examples:

  • a software developer could program an application showcasing their skills;
  • a sales professional could bring 25 customer leads or make cold calls;
  • an editor could proofread a document in the interview.

Another way to prove your skills is to offer testimonials from others. This is what McCausland did in his job-winning interview.

He created a two-page addendum to his resume, which he handed to the hiring manager in the interview.

Page one, titled “Accolades,” was made up of quotes from recommendations posted on his Linkedin profile. The quotes were divided into three parts: customers, managers, and business partners.

Page two was titled “Skills Required For Success.” In researching the employer, McCausland found they needed help with project management, problem solving, and execution. So he let former managers prove his expertise. “I took quotes from past performance reviews that tied into the skills they were looking for,” he said.

Putting this all together, here’s the time-line of what McCausland did to get hired:

  • learned how to “start working before you’re hired” on September 16, 2009;
  • landed a job interview after networking like a Guerrilla on September 21;
  • interviewed on September 22;
  • was offered the job on September 23.

He sums it up this way: “I got a position where none was advertised and did not have to compete with others because I nailed the interview, thanks to researching and demonstrating that I was already on the job.”

If this can work in Michigan, for a 6-figure executive, in 8 days, why not give this three-step method a try in your job search?

The Guerrilla Half Cover Letter

By Kevin Donlin | September 25th, 2009

Guerrilla half cover letter

Could this be the biggest breakthrough in cover letters since Gutenberg invented movable type in 1450?

Judge for yourself.

You’re looking at a Guerrilla Half Cover Letter, the very latest “job getting” tactic from Guerrilla Job Search Laboratories (where we all wear white coats and pocket protectors).

As you know, Guerrillas don’t submit their resume and cover letter to employers by email alone. It’s too risky, what with spam filters set on KILL and the ever-present delete key.

You must do more than email if you really want to find a job.

Printing and mailing your documents is better, but often not good enough.

Enter the Guerrilla Half Cover Letter, a new tactic we borrowed from the world of creative marketing, where all smart Guerrillas look for ideas.

Here’s how you can mail one today, in 4 easy steps …

1) Cut an envelope in half, like the example above.

2) Format a Microsoft Word file so that, after you print it, your cover letter will fit in the half envelope. (Trim if needed.)

3) Fold your resume lengthwise so that it fits in the half envelope.

4) Insert your half cover letter and resume into the half envelope. Seal the open end of the envelope with Scotch tape, so nothing falls out.

You’re ready to go!

What should your ”half cover letter” say?

Try this wording:

Dear Mr. Smith,

 I’ve sent you half a letter. Why have I done this?

 Because, if you hire a JOB TITLE without talking to me first, your business won’t do half as well.

 Also, I thought something unusual — like half a letter — would get your attention.

 Etc., etc.

The rest is a concise version of a Guerrilla Cover Letter that is all about the reader, his/her problems, and how you can solve them, backed up by specific achievements. (We teach this in our Guerrilla Job Search Home Study Course).

You have only half a letter, so don’t waste a word.

Now. I know most of you will think this idea is mildly insane. That’s understandable.

If you’d prefer to keep doing what you’ve been doing to get hired in this economy, good luck to you.

If you’re willing to try something different, however, why not give this Guerrilla Half Cover Letter a try?

The worst that can happen is … nothing. And for most job hunters, that’s exactly what’s happening. Besides, you can always TEST this idea on a company you have no desire to work for, just to make sure.

Note: This is just one of the dozens of advanced techniques we teach in our Home Study Course and our Guerrilla Job Search Bootcamp.

Another Guerrilla Job Search Success Story — Recession-Proof

By Kevin Donlin | September 24th, 2009

Here’s another Guerrilla Job Search success story (this is getting to be a pattern) …

Tom, from suburban Minneapolis, just got three times as many interviews in 30 days as he did in the past 11 months.

How? He started using Guerrilla Job Search tactics.

Specifically, he’s yet another person who quickly found success using our patent-pending “Coffee Cup Caper.”

Here’s a quick summary of Tom’s story:

  • he had been out of work for 11 months and had 1 interview using his old methods;
  • he sent a creative-looking coffee cup, a customized Guerrilla Cover Letter, and his Guerrilla Resume, in a box, using FedEx 2Day;
  • he called shortly after the box arrived, using a script we gave him;
  • he landed 3 interviews from 5 boxes mailed, a batting average of .600.

What’s important here is that Tom jump-started a lifeless job search — he had only 1 interview in the 11 months prior to attending the Guerrilla Job Search Secrets Revealed seminar, in Bloomington.

Now he’s getting interviews pretty much at will.

Does that interest you?

If so, please listen to my short phone interview with Tom below …

… then, if you’re in the Twin Cities, be sure to attend the next Guerrilla Job Search Secrets Revealed seminar.
