Anatomy of a Winning Guerrilla Job Search - 6 Linkedin Tips You Need to Know

By Kevin Donlin | October 13th, 2009

Remember Bill, the six-figure executive we helped get hired in only 8 days last month? In Michigan?

Bill is smart, action-oriented, and willing to try new things.

Which are three big reasons he found a great, high-paying job so fast using Guerrilla Job Search methods.

Because, frankly, our methods don’t work for mush-headed, lazy people who think they know it all.

If that describes you, you should leave. Now.

Still here?

Good.

Are you reasonably smart, willing to take action to find a job, and open to new ideas?

Very good.

The following article about Bill is just for you …

It’s based on an email he sent out to John, a fellow job seeker, explaining exactly what Bill did to get hired so quickly in Detroit, while thousands of other people are struggling.

Bill agreed to share his email to John with the public, so that others may benefit — and find jobs faster.

Here it is, with lessons you can use TODAY in your job search …

John,

My experience in this job market is that [recruiters] have been useless unless you are a C-level executive, as there are so many applicants per position that companies are foregoing the services of recruiters.

So what next?

1. Aggressive networking. Think about every person you know or even acquaintances and invite them to connect on Linkedin

2. Update the tagline under your name on Linkedin with something catchy. Different but professional, like this: “Creative Real estate Guru who can help you find solutions in a tough market.” That’s just an idea.

3. Update your profile to include a cleaner web address that you can use on your e-mail signature.  Yours is currently: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/jp123-fz/a/a31/z28. I would change it to: www.linkedin.com/JohnSmith

4. Once people accept your Linkedin invitation, send a personalized e-mail to them using Outlook (not the Linkedin utility) with a short, 4–5 sentence message saying you are looking for new career opportunities in “X” industry and do they have any recommendations on great companies that you should research.

Never ask someone for a job; ask them for a reference or suggestion on great companies you should pursue. Aim to get at least 30% of you network to respond with suggestions and create dialogue with them. Asking for a job with their company will yield you ZERO results -– trust me!

5. If you are connected with senior execs or people one level above your job function on Linkedin, consider writing them a recommendation. This will do two things:

a. They may return the favor with a recommendation about you.

b. Recruiters or other HR professionals looking at that individual about employment opportunities have a tendency to view the profiles of those who have made recommendations.  This can lead to a recruiter calling you.

6. Ask your references to write a recommendation about you on Linkedin.  This is best done if you write the recommendation yourself and forward it to them making it easy for them to edit it and follow through.

7. Get the book Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 2.0. It contains 1,001 tips, tricks and ideas to help you get a job.  It is about $14.00 on Amazon. The authors have a DVD that you can send away for, which I contribute to helping me get a job.  Plus check out their website for some great tips and tricks.
